Just for fun

March 21, 2007

in fun stuff, websites

So this little blog is a week old now — thank you to everyone who gave me a few minutes of your time — and I think we need a cup of coffee, a chunk of yesterday’s cake and a smile.

Remember those sets of recipe cards that used to come in the mail every few weeks, to be filed in the plastic hinge-top container that was part of the first shipment? (If you’re too young to remember, don’t go away yet.) I bought an old set at a yard sale for a dime, intending to sell it on eBay, till I realized nobody in their right mind would pay more than a dime, let alone shipping. So it’s still in the basement, waiting for a yard sale of my own.

Wendy McClure is more clever than I. She’s a comedy writer who found a 1974 set of Weight Watchers recipe cards in her parents’ basement and put some of them online. They make me wonder how WW survived the Seventies, with such delectable dishes as Snacks on a Stick and Jellied Tomato Refresher. The photography’s a riot — were there no prop stylists back then? — and if you’re curious what actually went into some of these ghastly things, a PDF file on her FAQ page will show you.

So for a quick smile, click on over to her site. Her favorite, and mine, is Rosy Perfection Salad. Just swallow that coffee before you look at it.
