That is indeed a cake. What’s more, every bit of it is edible. It’s all cake and sugar art.
There are several types of cake decorators on this glorious earth. There are the patient ones who are willing to cover cakes with hundreds, if not thousands, of little piped stars to make someone’s day with a character or theme cake. There are the elegant ones, like Rose Levy Beranbaum (The Cake Bible), whose sleek, sophisticated designs can set trends. And there are artists with marzipan and rolled fondant, and that’s what we have here.
I’ve seen this type of cake before, but nothing this elaborate or detailed. I’d never seen a kitchen made of cake art till now or — my favorite — an overflowing treasure chest. Zhanna of St. Petersburg is the artist and seems to have a fondness for many things American. Do check out the website; the photos are much larger there. The English isn’t perfect, but it’s a far sight better than my Russian.
I was in Russia long enough in the 1980’s that I had to learn at least a bit of the language, and while I still remember the word for “restaurant” I don’t think I ever learned the word “cake”, let alone words to describe these cakes, so I’ll use what might be a universal word by now - wow.
