When Knopf announced a June 19 publication date for A Woman in Charge, Carl Bernstein’s biography of Hillary Clinton, some news stories noted another Hillary biography was due in August. Little, Brown will publish Her Way by New York Times reporters Jeff Gerth and Don Von Natta, Jr. Now, Little, Brown is moving the publication date forward to June 19th, going head-to-head against Bernstein.
Little, Brown’s editor-in-chief is quoted by USA Today, saying, ”We felt confident we could go up against” Bernstein, acknowledging his celebrity status but pointing to Gerth And Von Natta’s Pulitzer Prizes.
Apparently no mention was made of the 1973 Pulitzer for Public Service to The Washington Post for its Watergate investigation by Woodward and Bernstein, although they were not cited individually. If it was mentioned, USA Today chose to omit it.
Little, Brown also questioned Knopf’s objectivity about Bernstein’s book since it also published Bill Clinton’s memoirs.
Knopf said, “The editorial integrity of this (publishing) house speaks for itself. It’s ludicrous for Little, Brown to suggest that,” and that Bernstein’s book “will create a tidal wave of interest. They hope a rising tide raises all boats. But … their book could drown in our wake.”
