Bravo to Bravo for coming to its senses and giving Anthony Bourdain his own blog for the rest of Top Chef Season 3. He’s been filling in as blogger for head judge Chef Tom Colicchio and his sharp writing is always worth reading, in my opinion. Sometimes his frustration jumps off the page, as it does when he writes about last night’s episode and Hung’s creation in the quick fire challenge:

Who EVER finds themselves yearning suddenly for cauliflower in their ice cream sundae? Who has ever — in recorded history — thought to themselves: “Gee…this ice cream would be so much better if only there were tempura flakes on it”? Or yearned, while spooning vanilla ice cream into their face, for FOAM?

There’s that pesky foam again.  The network says check back for details; that link is here.

By the way, Bourdain’s No Reservations, on the Travel Channel, joins Top Chef among this year’s Emmy nominees.

The cauliflower thing was just so off. His argument was something like it added lightness or cleaness or something. Yeah gads! Even cheese stuffed dates would have been better than a vegetable. Why not broccoli, to “add dimenision and color!” Was kinda nice that variations on old favorites won–cobbler and berries, wasn’t it? All I could think when watching Hung was, “I could do better than this.” What was on his mind?

Every time Hung says a monkey could do something he falls on his insufferable face. I want him to go. I want Howie to go (if ever there was an episode begging for a double elimination it was this one) but unfortunately we have to watch Howie’s sweat fall into his food at least another week. Eww.

I thought of Hung’s cauliflower ice cream when I ran across orange cauliflower yesterday and started giggling.
