George Bush had the audacity to compare the Iraqi mess with Vietnam to try to justify his military commitment in Iraq. He told a convention of veterans that withdrawing would lead to massive suffering, even deaths:
One unmistakable legacy of Vietnam is that the price of America’s withdrawal was paid by millions of innocent citizens whose agonies would add to our vocabulary new terms like ‘boat people,’ ‘reeducation camps’ and ‘killing fields.’
The White House is due to give Congress a status report on Iraq in mid-September.
