Republican former senator Fred Thompson took part in his first presidential debate on Tuesday, having lowered the expectations for himself. He nearly hit that mark. It must have been disappointing for those hoping Thompson, a former actor, could energize the base the way Ronald Reagan, another ex-actor, did. Thursday, Mike Keefe of The Denver Post came up with a wonderfully funny play on words.
About Thompson: During the Senate Watergate Committee’s investigation he was a young lawyer for Committee Republicans. Richard Nixon’s Oval Office tapes reveal Nixon called Thompson “dumb as hell” but friendly.
Friendly as in, help Nixon. The tapes also reveal White House aides saying Thompson had agreed to help undermine the credibility of John Dean, the White House whistle blower who testified to “a cancer on the Presidency.” And in his memoir, Thompson admits to secretly alerting the White House to important evidence as it was discovered.
How ironic that Thompson’s current campaign co-chair is former Senator Howard Baker, who hired Thompson for the Watergate job. Baker is the one who asked repeatedly during the Watergate hearings, “What did he know and when did he know it?”
