The Republican field of presidential candidates has shrunk by one. Kansas Senator Sam Brownback dropped out this week, citing a lack of support and money. No surprise here; last month he gave a speech in the heavily-populated (for New Hampshire) southern part of the state and only a handful of people showed up. Perhaps it says something about our culture that the sexual orientation of a fictional character in the Harry Potter books got massive news coverage while the status of a presidential candidate, however minor, was barely a blip on the radar.
Also this week, NBC announced former senator Mike Gravel will not be included in next week’s Democratic presidential debate in Philadelphia. Gravel did not meet the polling and fundraising requirements to participate in the debate, which is co-sponsored by the Democratic National Committee. All other candidates are expected to take part.
