Way back in the day, when outfielders were “chewing greenies” and Reggie Jackson was sticking out his hip to block a throw from first and help the Yanks win another series, I realized that the optimisms of my youth needed to be adjusted. The game had become, has become even more, about winning through any means fair or foul. To blame Bonds, to blame the athlete, see M. Vick here, for acting in accord with what society accepts as winning is to miss the point exactly. We can take pride in our denial by laughing with the comedians/cartoonians but still, he is us Pogo.
