If, like me, you enjoy apples out of hand and if you haven’t yet tried a Honeycrisp, you really ought to. Having one is like eating cider.
It’s a relatively recent apple, and patented. The official website says the two-toned Honeycrisp is a cross between the Macoun, also great out of hand, and the Honeygold, but Wikipedia disputes that. It says genetic fingerprinting found neither is a parent, that the Keepsake is one parent and the other is unidentified. Regardless of its pedigree it has become my favorite eating apple, juicy and bursting with flavor.
The website says they’re not easy to grow and don’t do well everywhere, which probably accounts for their price: usually $1.99 a pound here, often the highest in the apple section. I’ll take quality over quantity. Half a Honeycrisp is more satisfying than a jumbo Red Delicious, a variety that seems to have had the taste bred out of it in the quest for great looks.
If they’re not available in your area, the website does have a short list of reliable growers who sell high quality apples. Prepare to be hooked.

I am now aching for an apple. How wonderful they sound.
They’re fabulous! Do you have Honeycrisps in your part of the world?
I will look for them, ella.
I’ve been hooked on “Pink Ladies,” which are full of flavor, and they are also organically grown in my region.
I just googled, and see that they are quit popular, which I did not know. I would be another who enjoys them.
I will keep a look out for Honeycrip–I’m certain that Whole Paycheck has them in stock when available.
Thanks!!
I’ve never seen them out here in the West, but I’m intrigued. I’ve been pretty much exclusively purchasing Gala apples.
Around here $1.99 per lb. is a pretty good price for any apple.
Good morning, ladies! I’m a Pink Lady fan, too, but I have to say, these are better. I tried them a couple months ago and have bored everyone I know by raving about them.
@blue – I’m sure WP has them. Organic would be a great bonus. Can’t wait to hear what you think.
@chick – Galas are another goodie. Maybe we have good apple prices because there are so many orchards in New England and Upstate New York. 5# sacks of local Macs @ .69 per # are common in September.
I will have to look for those. I don’t think I have seen them and I am a fruitaholic!
You’ll love them, I think. I’m having one right now!
Another Gala Apple girl, here.
This year is the first that my grocery has Honey Crisp apples, so I finally got to try them.
They are delicious.
That they are! They taste the way apples used to taste.
