on Feb 8th, 2008Say it with sirloin?

Mr. Knife Sklls knows better than to give me something like this.Say what you will about us Americans, but we never miss a chance to commercialize a holiday, even in weird ways. And this is definitely weird. Even for us.

The Piggly Wiggly supermarket chain, with stores in the South and parts of the Midwest, thinks a hunk of beef is a great gift for Valentine’s Day, the perfect expression of love. Click on the ad to enlarge it (and don’t miss her ring, athough I don’t know how you could) and you’ll see there’s even a contest; every time someone buys Certified Angus Beef with their store courtesy card they’re entered automatically! Can’t you feel the excitement?

Call me short-sighted, but I’ve never really thought of supermarket steaks — that have to be cooked at home, no less — as the perfect gift for Valentine’s Day or any other special day. I still don’t.

Maybe I was adopted.

Right up there with Hammy Hanukkah :/

Don’t even get me started on the year I got a steam iron for Christmas . . . . .

This totally reminded me of Hammy Hanukkah!

A steam iron? Oh, sage, I hope at the very least it was a Rowenta. Consider yourself hugged.

I reject - reject - reject the advertising as BS.

P.S. Is MusEditions really a girl?

Sometimes a poem says it for me. This one is a favorite and seems apt for the time of year:

brightfeather - I know! Anybody who thinks nothing says love like beef is not even on my planet.

PS - That’s my impression. Do you know otherwise?

rhbee - Lovely, thank you. However, it’s under copyright so I’m removing it. But here’s a link:

    Mea, mea culpa,

    How about this instead:

    He waits, she waits
they try to match their separate gaits.
His smile is shy; her’s open and wide
    both meant to obscure
    the doubt inside.
    The words stick.
    They stall in mid flight,
    nose up and silent,
    poised just
above inertia and the rapid fail from fright.

Where’s the beef ? (- famous political quote).

And, frank(furter)ly, I’d have thought that Piggly Wiggly would be ‘bacon’ a menu for pork.

  11. Roadson 10 Feb 2008 at 3:59 pm

    Here it is:

“When I hear your new ideas, I’m reminded of that ad: ‘Where’s the beef?’” -Walter Mondale to Gary Hart in a debate in 1984.

I’ve also seen reports that Hillary used this quote last month to criticise Obama as a lightweight.

Just bring on the horseradish, Mrs Clinton, and we’ll show you.

    rhbee - Not a problem!

roads - If you never saw any of the spots that made “where’s the beef” a catchphrase here, some are on youtube:

    Hillary would recycle that…

My partner is a vegetarian, so that wouldn’t fly, but I think I would be quite impressed myself to receive a sirloin for any of the major holidays. Arise Sir Loin.
