on Jun 19th, 2008Salmonella still spreading
Federal health officials say the number of confirmed cases of tomato-related salmonella now stands at 383, and Dr. Robert Tauxe of the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) says, “We do not think the outbreak is over.”
Two states, Pennsylvania and New Hampshire, have reported their first cases. The outbreak has now sickened people in 30 states and the District of Columbia and 48 have been hospitalized.
Florida and Mexico are still suspected sources for the outbreak, but authorities say the problem of pinning down a source is twofold: by the time people get sick, they rarely have any tomatoes left and tomatoes carry no bar codes or other identifying tags to identify the suppplier.
