on Jun 25th, 2008Two new products I like
I love trying new products and while I never hesitate to have a laugh over those I think are overpriced, useless or in the realm of more money than common sense, I’m also happy to share products that do what they promise and give me my money’s worth. That’s what we have today.
First up is Clorox Anywhere, a sanitizing spray that’s gentle enough to use around food, kids and pets. I bought it for one reason: to sanitize a couple of poly cutting boards I reserve for raw meat and poultry. I never run the dishwasher till it’s full, so I usually wash those boards by hand. I’m not neurotic about cross-contamination but I am prudent and I like this insurance. Spray, wait two minutes, wipe, done. No rinsing.
I wasn’t expecting to use it for other things, even though it can be used on any hard, non-porous surface, but I’ve used it on the counter, refrigerator shelves and handles, door knobs and especially the sink and faucet after handling raw protein. There is a slight smell of bleach when first sprayed, but it dissipates in about 30 seconds. This is a product I’ll buy again.
The same goes for new food storage containers from Rubbermaid called the Produce Saver. They’re specially vented and enable produce to breathe and stay fresher longer.
As I wrote last year, produce does breathe and needs to. While I like Lock and Lock containers for many storage needs, its strong seal is no friend to most produce; opening a container of baby greens after a day or two and finding moisture inside the container is not what I want to see.
And I don’t with Produce Savers. I have a 5-cup container — the one on top of the large one with asparagus — and have used it with mushrooms, berries and lettuces. Its keeping quality for mushrooms is especially impressive, a week or more. Rubbermaid claims the containers will keep produce fresh up to 33% longer than traditional containers and I’ve found that claim to be true. The special tray on the bottom is a bonus.
There’s more information about the Produce Saver at Rubbermaid’s website, where you can also print out a coupon to save $1 on a purchase. And Clorox has abundant information about Clorox Anywhere, including a FAQ and video, on its site.

I’m thrilled to read about both of these, especially the produce saver. I can’t count the number of times I’ve uncovered slimy vegetables lurking in the fridge. As new products are constantly advertised, and so much of the ad is hype, it’s good to have you let us know these work. Yay!

Hi, Muse! And aren’t we all tired of wasting money on hopes and promises?
The Produce Saver was an impulse buy at the supermarket and I’ve printed my coupon to buy the large one today. Produce is rarely cheap but nowadays few people can afford to throw it away. I certainly can’t. Here’s hoping your veggies in the trash are few and far between!
Hi, Ellaella! Did you know that Clorox Anywhere is over 99% water? I just posted the “recipe” for how you can mix up your own a few days ago on my blog if you’re interested. I even used my pretty little bottle that I saved!
