I tried hard during my time off to avoid reading about things I write about and for the most part, I succeeded. But some issues attract global attention and can’t be ignored. I’m talking about the now-infamous “satirical” New Yorker cover of Barack and Michelle Obama fist-bumping, with him portrayed in Muslim garb. Brazil’s Simanca Osmani offered an alternative version of the magazine cover on Tuesday.

    Welcome back!

It’s far from clear to me where McCain can go here. The link with Bush is not helpful. With Obama taking a harder line on foreign policy since the nomination, it doesn’t leave him with too much room for manoeuvre.

Unless he turns really aggressive. Historically, I have the feeling that warmongering and sabre-rattling go down well with electorates. Let’s hope he doesn’t succumb.

Thanks and good to see you! I’m curious too and can’t wait to hear his acceptance speech at the convention. That should be the signpost and road map. It’s tricky to distance himself from Bush but Gore did it in 2000 after Lewinsky and all the other negatives from the Clintons.

I think pocketbook issues could be key this year. Food and energy prices are hurting many people (not all, of course) and promises of relief have done well historically, all the way back to “a chicken in every pot.”
