on Jul 28th, 2008Roasted grapes

Humor me here, or trust me. This is a great way to serve grapes. Just as roasting intensifies the flavors of vegetables, it brings out the sweetness of grapes. So does the touch of salt, which always makes sweet things sweeter. Roasted red grapes taste much like grape juice, but without added sugar. With a dip — I used crème fraîche – it’s an indulgence with little guilt.
This takes no time to make. Depending on your oven, it might take longer to preheat it than to roast the grapes. If you’ve never tried pepper on fruit, here’s an opportunity but use a light hand. And if you have any doubts at all about the freshness of your olive oil, taste it on its own. If it tastes off, even a little, it won’t taste any better after roasting. Trust me.
Roasted Grapes
Adapted from Eating Well
1/2 pound grapes, washed and dried
Extra-virgin olive oil, about 1 tsp or less
Coarse or sea salt, for sprinkling, to taste
Freshly-ground black pepper, for sprinkling, to taste
Crème fraîche, yogurt or sour cream, for dipping
Preheat the oven to 450 degrees F/ 230C/ Gas 8. Line a baking sheet or pan with foil.
Snip the grapes into small clusters and arrange on the foil. Drizzle on the olive oil and sprinkle lightly with the salt and pepper.
Roast for 10 - 15 minutes, until the grapes are fragrant and slightly wrinkled but not collapsed. Serve warm or at room temperature with chilled creme fraiche, yogurt or sour cream.

Roasted grapes! I’ve never heard of such a thing. I hear about all kinds of things I never would without you, ella! These look like something even I could make. I think they are nice enough (and unusual enough) to serve dinner guests?

Hi, Muse! Variety is wonderful, isn’t it? Sure, this is fun for guests…a casual meal is ideal. They’re not just delicious, they have the added benefit of being a talking point because many people have never heard of them. Anything that keeps conversation going is a good thing!
