on Jul 29th, 2008Top Chef 5 filming in Brooklyn?

topcheflogo.jpgNo word from Bravo about the next season of Top Chef, but The New York Observer says contestants have been quietly coming and going in the Williamsburg section of Brooklyn. The paper says they’re living in a $1 million+ condo — a duplexed penthouse on Bayard Street — and have been filming at a nearby soundstage.

A source tells the Observer the cast members have been seen for about two weeks and that they leave early in the morning, go straight back in the evening and aren’t allowed to talk to anyone.

The paper says few people in the neighborhood are aware of the chefs’ presence:

“No way,” said the cashier at Urban Rustic, an organic market down the street, who is a fan of the show. “That’s awesome.”

So will the cast do any shopping there?

“That would be cool, but I doubt it,” the cashier said. “They usually give them a budget.”

If filming has begun, it’s about two months earlier than last year, which means we could see the start of Season 5 in January. Season 4 just ended last month so it seems like a quick return, but with Bravo losing its top-rated Project Runway to Lifetime, it’s more than plausible.
