Yet another reason to eat your fruits and vegetables. A wide-ranging 12-year study by a team in Cambridge, England suggests a diet rich in Vitamin C might reduce the risk of developing type 2 diabetes. Fruits and veggies are the main source of Vitamin C in typical western diets.
More than 20,000 women and men, ages 40 to 75, took part in the study, which is reported today in the journal, Archives of Internal Medicine. The research measured the levels of Vitamin C in the bloodstream and factored out other risk characteristics, such as weight, smoking and family history. Those with the highest Vitamin C blood levels were least likely to develop the disease.
By the end of the study, 3.2 per cent of the participants developed type 2 diabetes.
In June, the US Centers for Disease Control said nearly 25 per cent of Americans 60 or older had diabetes, the seventh-leading cause of death in the US.
