I’ve come to think of the Republican convention as the Harry Potter convention for the way they put Bush and Cheney under a cloak of invisibility and for the way John McCain whipped out his magic wand to promise change (*cough*) as if a party other than his has controlled the White House for nearly the past eight years and Congress for five of those years. As if he hasn’t voted with Bush 90% of the time. I must say, it’s the first convention I can remember without a tribute to an outgoing president who is a member of that party.
And there was the abracadabra speech of Connecticut Senator Joe Lieberman, officially a Democrat for committee purposes, a self-proclaimed Independent and a Republican in all but name. It wasn’t Lieberman’s first convention speech; he was Al Gore’s running mate. He was also a presidential candidate himself for a few minutes four years ago. The most influential paper in his home state is the Hartford Courant, where Bob Englehart showed us how he looks to at least some of the hometown crowd.
