Cartoon of the week – 11/02

November 2, 2008

in Barack Obama, Democrats, GOP, cartoon of the week, politics

Wednesday ought to be designated National Shower Day, after what might go down as one of the dirtiest presidential campaigns in history. I wonder how it’ll stack up against 1828, when Andrew Jackson unseated John Quincy Adams?

In that campaign, mud was slung by both candidates with abandon, the most egregious incident being Adams’ exposure — through the press, of course — of the little-known fact that Jackson’s wife Rachel wasn’t quite divorced yet when they got married, so they had to re-marry when they discovered it and everything was finalized. Well, Adams went to town with that. She was called an adultress, he was called a paramour, and it all went downhill after that. But Jackson won anyway. Rachel, however, had a history of heart trouble and died of a heart attack shortly before the inauguration. The poor dear already had her dress (I believe they paid for it themselves) and she was buried in it, on Christmas Eve.

This time around, the Obama campaign chose not to exploit the fact unearthed by the Los Angeles Times in July that John McCain took out the marriage license for Wife #2 while still married to Wife #1. Can you imagine the fury of the wingnuts if it had been the other way ’round? Of course you can.

This past week, Senator Obama addressed the McCain/Palin campaign’s persistence in calling him every name in the book in an effort to smear him, but he did it in his usual high-road manner saying, “Soon, he’ll be accusing me of being a secret Communist because I shared my toys in kindergarten.”

I’ve had enough, you’ve had enough and it seems RJ Matson of the St. Louis Post Dispatch has had enough too. Let’s hit the shower.

You’re welcome! I almost used a comic instead of the editorial cartoon till I started thinking about 1828. I need to upload it and stick a link here in comments. It’s very um, amusing.

Barry’s such a cool character, isn’t he? I think ‘unflappable’ is the word for him. If he were a lolcat, his caption could be: klass. ai haz it.
