One of my favorite features in fashion magazines shows us how to nearly duplicate designer looks for less, so when I saw two similar heart cookies recently, I noticed how much money one can save by making them. Both are based on those little candy message hearts for Valentine’s Day. If you want to buy them, you can get 9 of them for $22 — yes, 9, which works out to $2.44 each — and that’s before shipping costs. They are beautiful and I’m sure Williams-Sonoma is selling a lot of them:

Your $22 also brings you a cookie tin, probably not large, because the cookies aren’t quite 2 1/2″.
I like hearts so I picked up two more metal heart cutters at the supermarket last week, 2 for $1, and one is that size. Add in the modest cost of ingredients, a bit of food coloring and your time and hey, presto (as my British friends say) look what we can have:

The most important ingredient — love — is both free and priceless.
You can find the instructions to make them here, and if you’re tired of regular sugar cookies so soon after the holidays, try my spiced cut-out cookies here.
