Quote of the Month – Jan 09

February 1, 2009

in Quote of the month

You’re welcome.

Capt. Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger’s entire, modest reply to a passenger who thanked him emotionally and effusively after his emergency landing in the icy Hudson River January 15 with 155 aboard his Airbus. The US Airways pilot, by all accounts a shy man, treated it like business as usual, but it was the first time in about 50 years a pilot made a water landing without losing a single soul.

The captain, with decades of experience, has been promised a key to the City of New York. Well done, sir. Amazing, actually.

Standing ovation! :D

CNN had video from security cameras along the docks. I think I watched that clip a dozen times. He did a remarkable thing landing that plane.

For the dumba##es that are suing … you lived. GAL. :P

GAL is right, sage. Sheesh. He and his crew have been lauded as heroes in every part of the world. I think they’re going to be honored tonight at the Super Bowl.

I think this episode proved so clearly that while corporations save money by encouraging veteran employees to take early retirement or a buyout, there is no substitute for experience and if it’s there when it counts, cost is not even a factor. Not. Even. Richard Branson said he’s willing to pay Sully a bazillion dollars if he’ll work for Virgin.

The humble simplicity of it stayed with me, Lauren. Impressive feat indeed.
