The FDA today warned consumers to stop eating all products containing pistachios and to hold onto the products while authorities try to determine the source of a possible salmonella outbreak.
Setton Farms of California, the country’s second-largest pistachio producer, is voluntarily recalling more than 1 million pounds of nuts, its entire 2008 crop. Dr. David Acheson, assistant commissioner for food safety, is quoted by washingtonpost.com saying, “The number of products that are going to be recalled over the coming days will grow, simply because these pistachio nuts have then been repackaged into consumer-level containers.”
Last Tuesday, Kraft Foods notified the FDA that routine product testing turned up salmonella in roasted pistachios. Wednesday, the company and the Georgia Nut Co. recalled their Back to Nature Nantucket Blend trail mix. Shortly after, the FDA contacted Setton and California health officials.
According to the Post, it will take weeks to figure out how many products could be affected because Setton shipped pistachios to three dozen wholesalers nationwide.

Wow. Thanks for the update. I probably wouldn’t have known otherwise.
On that “processed” foods post, where I go off on peanuts and such, I had a knee jerk reaction because I had gone online to purchase *organic* peanuts in bulk, for nut butter, and was informed that they didn’t have any because of the recall.
Apparently, even organic nuts went go through this Georgia Co., which flabergasts me.
And now this?
Pistachio’s are a favorite, though thank goodness I’ve been passing on them because of the price.
Word Bandit’s last blog post..Quadrillions!
You’re most welcome. I never did anything with the peanuts because it’s mostly processed foods involved but also because the msm were all over it. This struck me as one that might slip through the cracks or not get nearly as much attention.
Yes, indeed, organics went through that plant. Ditto the tainted spinach two summers ago; much of it was organic. I read a good piece somewhere recently (NYT or WP I think, I’m too tired to dig it out) that stressed the fact that organic does not mean pure.
What? Pistachios? Oh, the humanity!
Like Word Bandit, I hadn’t bought any for a while, but it was always nice to know they were there. Not, for practical purposes, they’re not.
Kinda sucks.
Phil Barron’s last blog post..On the way to April 20 (Support Your Local Newspaper Day)
Hi, Phil! I love the little devils too and have some in the freezer (still!) after buying a bucketload in bulk for my chilled peach soup. As a woman, I think one of the greatest days for fingernails was the day shelled pistachios went on the market.
Oh no! I checked the date of your post to see if it was April Fools’ Day! I’ve been busy and out of the news loop, so say it isn’t so!! oh dear! Pistachios have been a nice treat.

I agree, Tess. They’re so good as a garnish, not just snacking, and many cuisines use them as an ingredient. Seems these recalls always involve things I take for granted.
