Peep Krispie Treats

April 11, 2009

in food, fun stuff, recipes

chickWhen “decapitate” is a recipe’s first word, I can’t help but read on. And so we have Peep Krispie Treats, sent to me after I mentioned in March that just looking at Peeps makes my teeth hurt. It’s based on the classic and popular Kellogg’s Marshmallow Treats and uses the equally iconic marshmallowy Peeps.

So buy a box of Kellogg’s Rice Krispies; the Treats recipe is on the box. Get some Peeps too. Decapitate 20 of them and set their heads aside to use later. Make the Treats according to the directions on the box but use the headless Peeps in place of the marshmallows. Pour the stuff into a pan and pat it down. While it’s still warm, press the Peeps’ heads on top, spacing them evenly. Let cool before cutting.

I think kids would love these and would probably be happy to perform the decapitations. Frankly, I was a little squeamish just doing it to a photo. For its part, Kellogg’s has a more benign Easter-themed Treats recipe on its website, for eggs shaped from the mixture and dipped in chocolate.

Happy Easter!

Decapitation in a recipe! Hahaha, you did have me giggling. Yes, kids would love this! I’m sending it to some, with, of course, a word of caution to the parents. :D

So, did you rip off the heads or use a wee knife? I think if you twist the little heads around and around, eventually they give up the ghost, as it were.

I fully expected you to say “shape krispie mixture into peep body shapes and jam a little head on top.” It’s probably a Very Good Thing that I don’t have children!

I suspect many years ago, when you were quite impressionable, you saw the Robert Chambers tape on A Current Affair. I think Bill O’Reilly was the host then, in his tabloid TV days. Not much different from today, akshly.

This reminded me of the sole survivor of last year’s dried-Peep extravaganza…it’s STILL on my bookshelf at work, hard as a rock, just as its brethren were, prior to their consumption. I should really eat that thing. Or put it on my friends’ desks.

Best laugh of the day, thanks! :D

You could always hang on to it, just to see how long it (and its who-knows-what ingredients) can survive, like the french fries in the dvd extras of Fast Food Nation. That clip’s on YouTube if you’ve never seen it.

Happy Easter!
