The people behind the Swift Boat campaign are already spending millions to sink health care reform before it happens. Health spending accounts for about 17% of our economy and President Obama says no other nation spends more, but the system is broken. “At the rate we’re going, we are expected to spend one-fifth of our economy on health care within a decade. And yet we’re getting less for our money.”
Health care costs are escalating at about 6% per year, far ahead of inflation. This week, the president met with health care industry leaders representing groups from doctors to insurance companies to unions. No, they didn’t promise to cut costs — as if — but they did promise to cut the rate of growth by 1 1/2% per year, a change estimated to save up to $2 trillion over ten years.
Even that is something they’ve resisted in the past, so it’s understandable if some are wondering if something froze over. (And did the Red Devils win?)
