The World Health Organization has raised the swine flu alert to its highest level, a pandemic. It’s the first such declaration in more than 40 years.

WHO Director General Margaret Chan said, “We are at the earliest days of a global pandemic.” The new H1N1 strain is spreading easily from one person to another, and from one country to another in more than one region. Seventy-four countries report cases and Chan says its further spread is “inevitable.”
