It’s still Topic A among us political junkies: why is Sarah Palin quitting with almost half her term left? And the consensus gut feeling is something’s coming and it won’t be good. Her announcement raised more questions than it answered and in typical Palin fashion, she took no questions. She was clearly nervous, speaking a mile a minute and more disjointed than usual. Her popularity in Alaska has dropped but even the Anchorage Daily News is stumped; an editorial says the resignation makes no sense.
There’s near-agreement this is not the way to further presidential hopes. Strategist Ed Rollins, who steered Ronald Reagan’s 1984 re-election campaign, told CBS, “Most political people fight to the end. It’s now tough. She didn’t finish the job.” He scoffed when asked about her supposed gift for proving her naysayers wrong. “You have to remember, everybody else climbed the mountain; she got put on top of it by John McCain. We would not be talking about Sarah Palin if McCain hadn’t picked her.”
Rollins’s verdict? “I think the bottom line is you saw a shooting star come crashing to Earth.”
Only Fox, with its usual partisan spin, portrays it as a calamity for the left. And if you think Fox isn’t licking its chops at the prospect of hiring her…. (She might be salivating too. Fox’s studios are just a few blocks from Saks, and it’s hard to go back to Wal-Mart after a taste of luxury shopping.)
Her successor called Palin “Alaska’s greatest gift” to the US. Apparently he forgot his job is to make the state look good.

I’ve got another hypothesis that amuses the heck out of me, but I’ll keep my counsel on that. Suffice it to say the other shoe will drop. The only real question is, “Birkenstock, Doc Marten or strappy little spike-heeled fuschia number?”
At least she bumped MJ for a while.
