Iowans vote no to Michael Jackson made of butter

July 17, 2009

in Miscellany, fun stuff

cow made of butter at Iowa State FairThe things I learn as a blogger. Until recently I had no idea Iowa’s state fair features sculptures made of butter; a life-size cow of butter is always included. After Michael Jackson died, the idea of sculpting him from butter came up — at one point truth sounded like satire — and after some objections, the fair’s website put it to a vote.

With more than 100,000 votes cast, the idea was rejected 65% to 35%. Instead, the lunar landing will be sculpted. And the cow, of course.

But here’s where it got so weird it sounded satirical. Earlier this week, when buttery Michael was still a possibility, PETA said — for real — margarine should be used instead because, you know, margarine has nothing to do with animals. It doesn’t even want the cow to be made of butter.

The fair starts August 13 in Des Moines. If you go, please take pictures of the butter sculptures and I’ll post some.
