Cartoon of the week – 7/26

July 26, 2009

in cartoon of the week, politics

With tens of millions of Americans not having access to affordable health care, millions of others disparage the prospect of universal coverage as socialism. And it’s the way they say it that gets me: A) as if it’s a horrifying prospect because B) they think it’s the same as Communism and C) they’re so smugly sure they’re right about A and B while D) being more smugly sure their lives will never take a turn for the worse.

To which I say A) it’s not and much of our lifestyle is socialized B) it’s not and where were you when this was taught in school? C) you’re not and D) don’t tempt fate; it’s a long way down from an ivory tower.

Of course now I have this cartoon to address some of A, but I don’t think they’ll want to hear it. Willful ignorance is so much easier and far more comfortable.

I know, I know! Sheesh, you’d think “socialism” was a swear word or something! What about all those nice European countries that provide real benefits for their citizens, and are supposed to be friends of ours? Do the A-B-C-D’ers want to call them names, too?

Hey, Muse!! Yeah, it’s the S word now. Hee!

I love it when those who object are Anglophiles because I can point out (not remind them, because they didn’t know) that England has had socialized medicine for eons. That’s usually when I discover they’re not necessarily Anglophiles but merely besotted by a handful of mostly-useless and kinda-dim people who enjoy untold wealth and privilege by an accident of birth. Blerg.
