I used to collect wine labels; some are almost art. One that’s inspired by art has been banned in Alabama because it’s just too darn erotic for their delicate Southern sensibilities.
The state liquor agency says Cycles Gladiator Wine’s label with its drawing of a nymph and her winged bicycle violates regulations forbidding “persons posed in an immoral or sensuous manner.” Cycles Gladiator’s website notes the inspiration for its logo was a famous French art poster painted in 1895 by G. Massias.
So it might play in Peoria or be the toast of the town in Paris, but in Alabama the painting somehow is more offensive than real-life women exposing their tramp stamps and men “dressed up” in tee shirts bearing the likeness of a dead race car driver.
I wonder if they’d have approved it if she’d been riding a Harley?
