The lion of the Senate

August 26, 2009

in Democrats

Ted Kennedy official Senate portrait
May the road rise up to meet you.
May the wind be always at your back.
May the sun shine warm upon your face;
the rains fall soft upon your fields and until we meet again,
may God hold you in the palm of His hand.

Irish blessing

Edward Moore Kennedy
1932 -2009

Rest in eternal peace, Senator, and sing with the angels. Someday the help you championed in S1 all those years ago will surely come to pass.

I’ve been feeling melancholy ever since I heard the news. “The last of the golden boys”, I said to a friend. He said “He never WAS a golden boy.” I object. Like many of us, he had his flaws. He could have sat out public service; resigned or declined to run again when he had some troubles, but as many commentators have said, he may have done more in his senate service than he might have been able to as President. He was a good senator, and one hopes his work and memory will inspire some of those live lawmakers to show some…life.

Thanks for those comments, Muse. Those inclined to dislike or hate him will never give him a break, just as Obama’s haters refuse to see any good. EMK achieved so many things that some people either have forgotten, never knew about or choose to dismiss — everything from Title IX to COBRA to WIC and lots in between. I’ll probably touch on this for Sunday’s ‘toon.

Besides, he’s already been judged by the only one who counts.
