Whew! Did you think I’d never resurface from the lagoon of moving? My head’s not above water yet, but it will be in a week or two. Meanwhile, here’s what’s been going on, courtesy of the slowest connection in years. If there’s such a thing as wireless dialup, I’m on it.
Last-minute issues forced me to stay in New Hampshire three days longer than planned. As I was utterly exhausted after several 18 – 20 hour days, it wasn’t necessarily a bad delay. Shortly before I left I was on a stretch of road I’d traveled literally hundreds of times when I noticed the word farewell. Whether it was a new sign or I’d been oblivious to it I don’t know, but I had to photograph it. Good omen, I thought.
I got to Maryland about a week ago, always happy to see the state flag. One of the few times I sat through an entire episode of Ace of Cakes, Duff said Maryland’s flag is the coolest and I can’t argue with that. The coat-of-arms/medieval look fits in with the official state sport — and here’s a bit of trivia that’ll win you five bucks every time — which is jousting. Jousting tournaments are common here.
I’ve been so swamped I haven’t even had time to visit Williams-Sonoma. Or Bloomie’s. Need I say more? I have had time to visit the prettiest Kmart I’ve ever seen, which I never would have guessed was Kmart if not for the familiar K.
There’s an internet cafe inside (probably with a much faster connection than I have) and upscale (ish) merchandise similar to the Manhattan Kmarts. And if you’re ever in NYC at Macy’s, go catty-corner to Kmart, multi-storied with elevators and escalators. If you’re a Kmart fan as I am, and as easily amused, it’s a fun stop.
So I have a great place to live but won’t be in it for another week or so, and then comes all the unpacking, organizing and decorating. I’m not going to rush it or push myself too hard. The kitchen’s small but very well-appointed and there’s a long stretch of counter space that’s waiting for rolling pins and pastry doughs and fondants. I’m itching to get busy there. Meantime, I’m in one of those hotels for extended stays with almost a full kitchen and I’ve challenged myself to make a recipe that caught my eye in New Hampshire. It’s for ravioli with nuts and apple and here’s why it’s a challenge:

Yep, that’s the entire batterie de cuisine. Have you ever seen a sadder silverware drawer? I was happy to see the small colander but with only a deep skillet and saucepan, I had to do some thinking and settled on mini-ravioli, which I’ll boil in the skillet. And with several pounds of walnuts on the moving van, that had to be changed, but I have the ingredients and I hope to make it tonight or tomorrow. Make-do cooking, whether in a dorm, summer rental or a place like this, can be fun.
Thank you for your patience as I make these major changes to my life. Right before I left New Hampshire I went to a shop where I’d made my first purchase there. I liked the idea of my last purchase, a housewarming gift to myself, being there too. I bought a long, narrow block of wood which has this quote burned into it: Just when the caterpillar thought the world was ending, it turned into a butterfly. I might have gotten a few words wrong just now, but you get the idea. It struck me as uncannily appropriate to my life, especially since I’ve always appreciated the butterfly’s symbolism of renaissance and rebirth. One day in early summer when I was almost at my lowest — physically and emotionally — I was on a bench at a drug store, just having a think. A huge, gorgeous monarch butterfly fluttered by and came to rest on my knee. It was oddly comforting.
I think I’ve made the right move.

Thanks, Janet!
Lots of luck, happiness, and good health in your new home.
Now that you’re close to DC and New York, enjoy all of the opportunities.
Many thanks, Lechat. I did get back to NY from time to time while in NH, but hope to do so more often now; I’ve already got a mental list of things to get at Zabar’s.
I hope you and yours had an easy fast and are enjoying all the new year has to offer.
Glad you’ve arrived well and I wish you all the best in your new place!

Thanks, Cat! I hope you’re enjoying your new place too!
Paragraph 1: I did wonder!
P2: LOVE that sign!
P3: LOVE the flag! And had no idea about the jousting. What an interesting tidbit!
P4: I didn’t know there WERE pretty KMarts. I’ll have to find one.
P5: I have actually seen a sadder drawer, but not by much. (My first apartment.) I’m glad you’re looking at this as an adventure. I’m so pleased for you about the new counter, too.
P6: Oh, your Monarch sounds lovely! And, you found the sign, too! I’m pleased to read that you’re taking it easy. Moving can be SO exhausting.
This is such a chatty, detailed post, I almost felt I was right there seeing everything with you.
Welcome home, ella!

Hi, Muse! Glad you enjoyed it. I’ve thought of you sooo often, like every time I’m in Trader Joe’s (every other day or so). Have you tried their packaged chipotle-lime chicken strips? Wonderful stuff.
I actually have a jouster on the charm bracelet I started in high school. I still wear it once in a blue moon and people are always amazed at the state sport.
I think I’m glad I didn’t see the drawer in your first apartment. Nothing in this one matches. They look like leftovers from diners that went belly-up. Yeah, the long counter’s nice. It runs below the breakfast bar, which is a fun touch. I have as much, if not more, overall square footage as in my house but I guess the designer hates cleaning kitchen floors as much as I do.
The appliances are great and the stove & dishwasher are brand new, so that’s a trade-off I’m happy to take.
BTW, it’s going to be almost as warm as Phoenix here today – 83. Waaay warmer than in the Little Snowball!
“Just when the caterpillar thought the world was ending, it turned into a butterfly.”
How beautiful and appropriate.
Congratulations on the move; certain that once your wings dry a bit, the flight will be more wonderful and breathtaking than you imagined.
All love.

Thanks very much, Word. It is a wonderful sentiment. A companion piece quoted Babe Ruth: “Don’t be afraid to strike out.”
Welcome home! It all sounds perfectly wonderful, although I must admit I was taken a bit aback by that jousting business. I wonder if we could institute that in DC to settle a few things?
Love the silverware and etc. Your tale reminds me of my first apartment in Kansas City, where I did an amazing amount of cooking in a basement with an electric skillet!
Hadn’t thought of that in forever.
I’ve got to go google this Trader Joe’s. I hear folks on the West and East coasts talking about it (him? them?) all the time, but I’m not sure they’re anywhere around here. Key lime/chipotle chicken strips makes it necessary to know for sure!

Oh, electric skillets! You know exactly what I mean then. My mom had an electric skillet and used it a lot. I hadn’t thought of that appliance in ages either.
Trader Joe’s is in only about half the states and they are making their way to your part of the world. Sort of. I checked on their fun website, and it seems the closest stores to you are in, um, Georgia…
But you have Austin and the Central Market, the most amazing food store in America, imo. It’s almost worth planning a vacation around.
Hi Ella,
I would email you because I’m wondering how you are, but then again, I don’t want to disturb you…
Please tell me how you are doing and if I could help?

Hi, Tess. Busier than a one-armed paper hanger. If you can finish installing shelves and organizing stuff, you can help!
Otherwise, your moral support is a boost. Thanks very much.
Ah, ha! There you are! Good to see you passing through. If you have anything you need varnished, give me a call
