To hear the GOP tell it, President Obama winning the Nobel Peace Prize represents the end of civilization as we know it. Never mind that much of the world rejoices with us, applauding the selection of someone who is restoring the respect of America in other lands, respect shredded by one Republican Texas cowboy.
It’s not just the usual suspects, the wingnuts with microphones and their relatively small number of disciples, who had a collective stroke; GOP Chairman Michael Steele mocked President Obama and his Nobel in a letter to the (dwindling) party faithful, a letter in which he had the unmitigated gall to then ask for donations of up to $1,000.
Mr. Steele, you ought to be ashamed of yourself. This country is divided enough, thanks in large part to your party’s shenanigans and willingness to let a hate-filled, racist radio host be the de facto head of your party. When polarization is encouraged by the man whose name is on the letterhead as the official party leader, something is very wrong and it’s not the Nobel Prize.
Conservatives have long been fond of saying, “America. Love it or leave it.” It’s time they heeded their own bumper-sticker philosophy.
